Iran halts crude oil sales to U.K., French cos

Wall Street Market Watch -- NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Iran's Ministry of Petroleum said Sunday the country has halted sales of crude oil to British and French companies. European Union states have agreed to stop importing Iranian crude from Jul. 1. A U.K. government official told the BBC Iran's move would have no impact on U.K. energy security. The news service quoted AFP as saying that in 2011 France bought 3% of its oil, or 58,000 barrels per day, from Iran. The U.K. imported even less, said the BBC.

There are links to governmental statistics should you wish to follow and verify what is said within the body of the article. Misconception: We get most of our oil from the Middle East.* Fact: Just 9.8% of oil consumed in the U.S. comes from the Middle East. According the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the U.S. consumes 19.2 million barrels of petroleum products per day. Of that amount, a net 49% is produced http://www.eia.gov/totalenergy/data/annual/showtext.cfm?t=ptb0501a domestically. The rest is imported. Where is it imported from? Only a small fraction comes from the Middle East, and that fraction has been declining in recent years. Last year, imports from the Persian Gulf region – which includes Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates – made up http://www.eia.gov/totalenergy/data/monthly/pdf/sec3_7.pdf 9.8% of total petroleum supplied to the U.S. In 2001, that number was 14.1%. The U.S. imports more than twice as much petroleum from Canada and Mexico than it does from the Middle East. Add in the share produced domestically, and the majority of petroleum consumed in the U.S. comes from North America. This isn't to belittle our energy situation. The nation still relies on imports for about half of its oil. That's bad. But should the Middle East get the attention it does when we talk about oil reliance? In terms of security and geopolitical stability, perhaps. In terms of volume, probably not.

It will provide a few hundred jobs as inspectors and pumping plant operators when it is running. Some of the oil will be refined in Texas, but most will be shipped to China as crude oil. A few more refinery jobs, a few tanker loader jobs and some sailors. Besides, we can buy the oil to be refined from our friends in Canada instead of our enemies in Iran, Venezuela and a few other OPEC countries. MAKE NORTH AMERICA ENERGY SELF SUFFICIENT!!! Canada, the U.S. and Mexico!!!

The U.S. only needs a few refineries to make all of the non-fuel products that we have to make from oil. The U.S. has a 100 year supply of natural gas that can be easily compressed into Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). Diesel engines can be easily converted to run on LNG. If all 18 wheelers were converted for about $2,000 to run on LNG and large high pressure (like propane) tanks were installed at all truck stops it would be cheaper to drive a big truck. American automobile manufacturers should start making cars and light trucks that run on LNG. They can go as far as a gasoline engine can on one tank of gasoline instead of 100 miles before recharging like EVs. THE U.S. COULD EASILY BECOME ENERGY INDEPENDENT!!!
