If we weren't so desperately dependent on oil this wouldn't matter.

Unrest in the Middle East, the party of "BIG Oil", and the unrepentant lust of the U.S. Oil industry is why gasoline prices have become unaffordable.
Just 4 years ago the first digit on a gas station marquee was a 2 as in 2 dollars and change for a gallon of gasoline. Now we are about to see a 4 or even a 5 as the first digit on a gas station marquee. How sad...

We need two separate oil markets, one for Asia, and one for the rest of the world!

"Given where we are in the year, prices are unusually high. And if trends hold, then the national average will be well over the $4 freakout point sometime this summer."
"freakout point"??????
It it that easy to get people to "freakout????
Are we adults or unstable children that "freakout" at things????
Use less, means to buy less, means to spend less, and no "freakout".

So the moral to the story is we need more supply, not puppy and flower petal green energy solutions that are only band-aids.

The article could have have been written shorter. All of the explanations in paragraph 4 contribute to it. Period...end of article.

We can make a little difference with conservation. We can make a little difference by drilling more, but that will take time. We can keep making hybrids and electric vehicles, but they have range limits.
We need to develop a real alternative to oil to power our transportation in this country. We have a 100 year supply of mostly untapped natural gas. Drill for it, compress it until it is a liquid (LNG) and start converting 18 wheeler diesel trucks to use it, about $3,000. Install high pressure tanks and filling systems at all truck stops on the Interstate Highway System and in large cities. American automobile manufacturers should start equipping many cars and light trucks with LNG fuel systems. LNG is cheap, runs cleaner than any other fuel and we don't have to import it.
Energy independence for the U.S. ASAP!

At least the U.S. is finally getting tough on fuel economy standards after decades of caving into to the auto industry for exemptions and delayed deadlines. And a big reason Detroit rolled over on this is because GM and Chrysler are beholding to the feds for bailing them out, otherwise I suspect they'd be up to their old tricks again. So, maybe that bailout had a secondary good outcome.

The reasons are multiple but will produce one overall effect...the destabilization of domestic economic growth.

dyanmouse said it like it is.
Obama is the problem. Everything has gone to hell since he took office. Wife has the biggest staff ever. It's Obama's way or it's Bush's fault.
We must vote this man out. We still do not really know who he is. He should be sent to prison for all the crimes he has committed against America & his wife should have to pay back her staff's salary.
Bottom line Obama is the reason prices are where they are today.

The real reason is because we have to have it and they know it. I guess they could really charge anything they wanted since our Government leaders are in bed with them.

What ever they say the reason is, it's the speculators that cause the price ups and downs. Maybe they need to be controlled?

"So what explains the sudden rise in oil? Well, basically, good old supply and demand." Yeah, but what is determining the demand and supply?
