West-to-East oil pipeline idea is gaining momentum, gets support from unlikely source

Yahoo news blog -- Alberta's oil sand producers have tried to send their oil south but were stymied by Barack Obama and the opponents of the Keystone pipeline. They're now trying to send their bitumen to Asia but are facing a lot of resistance to the Gateway pipeline project in British Columbia.

So, where should they send their excess capacity? How about a pipeline to Eastern Canada?

It's an idea that seems to be gaining momentum and, on Friday, it received support from an unlikely source — Thomas Mulcair.

In an address — the text of which was published by iPolitics — to the Canadian Club of Toronto at the Royal York Hotel, the NDP leader pledged his support for such a project that would see Alberta oil process at eastern refineries

Not only would Alberta and Saskatchewan get substantially higher (normal market) prices selling oil to Canadians in place of selling it to the US at a huge forced discount, but all the jobs would accrue to Canada....

The pipeline was originally routed through some very valuable land and we had only Big Oil's word that it was safe. More investigation is required before building can begin. The Obama administration has been remarkably pragmatic about its energy policy and has not opposed energy development if there was a safe plan in place. So it will be with the Keystone Pipeline.

You will find a list of coutries with costs much below our own - in contrast to countries with costs the same of higher than our own. And that's why you will see significant heal-dragging by industry and the Harper administration in ever allowing a dilbit (tar sands) pipeline to eastern Canada...

It will be interesting to see how the eastward pipeline proposal goes. It would be funny if they throw up the same objections. Perhaps the opposition understands the risks with this oil not to mention we really do not have any spare refining capacity to handle it. We just lost a refinery in New Brunswick and gas prices on the east coast went up $.10/gallon overnight.
